The Challenge will take place in Ecuador - the smallest country in the rugged Andean highlands, Ecuador has an array of vibrant indigenous cultures, well-preserved colonial architecture, otherworldly volcanic landscapes and dense rainforest. And all that in a nation no bigger than the US state of Nevada.
The majority of those taking part in this type of event are usually long distance/endurance riders. Hence the need for my strict training on the lead up to the challenge.
This event is a challenge (6 – 7 hours in the saddle for 5 days) it requires a high standard of fitness and involves riding over rugged and remote terrain somewhere in the region of 30km per day.
The riding takes place above 2500 metres (on one night we camp at 4000m). During the day, the temperatures can rise to 28°C although most days start with a crisp 6-10°C and the night-time temperature can drop to 2°C. At night around the crater lakes, the temperature can drop to freezing.
